George Tunney passed away Friday morning, July 2, 2010 at the age of 88. George was born on April 4, 1922 to the late William and Mary Tunney in Saginaw, Michigan. George attended Otto Roeser Elementary, South Intermediate and Arthur Hill High School. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was assigned to the "Sylvester's Circus" 2nd air transport C-46 squadron, flying missions over China, Burma and India. It was during this tenure he received the Distinguished Flying Cross as a flight engineer flying supplies for the war effort over the "Hump". After the war George worked for the City of Saginaw for 43 years as a helicopter mechanic. He married Evelyn on June 20, 1954 and started their family in 1955 dedicating their life to raising six children. In later years, George loved restoring old Ford Thunderbirds, volunteering in Soap Box Derby competitions and bingos as well as taking an active role in his grandchildren's lives. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Saginaw and was an avid follower of current political events. He also enjoyed traveling to Northern Michigan with family and to Southern California for vacations.

Surviving are his six children and their families, Mark, Patricia, Susan (Chuck), Mary Kay, Tommy (Yuko) and Tammy (David); four grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Joshua and Taylor. Mr. Tunney was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, one child, Brian Steven, and three siblings, Melvin, Bernard, and Bob Tunney.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at Caretel Rehabilitation Center, Turner House, in Bay City for treating George with kindness and dignity in his final days.

George's Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2445 N. Charles St. Rev. Fr. Emmett L. Marceau will officiate. Rite of Committal will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Military Honors will follow conducted under the auspices of American Legion Post #439.

Friends are welcome to visit with the family at St. Helen Catholic Church from 8:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
