Helen Marie Hurney (1937–2024)

Dayton, Ohio

Formerly of Saginaw, Michigan

Our dear mother, grandmother, and Ge-Ge sadly passed away at the age of 87 in Dayton, Ohio, on September 17th, 2024, after her second courageous battle with cancer. Helen's warm smile, the smell of her award-winning bread, and the beauty she created with flowers will be forever missed.

Helen was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the daughter of John Wargo and Norma (Pearson) Wargo Butts. On April 24th, 1954, she married Vincent Hurney and after 63 years of marriage he preceded her in death in April of 2017. Her joy was her family and the home she created with and for them.

Survivors include daughter Joyce (Keith) Hughey, son Michael (Gayle) Hurney, and daughter Susan (John) Bowman; grandchildren Sarah (Robert) Johnson, Joseph (Megan) Hovis, Donnie (Jill) Smith, Steven (Krystyna) Hurney, Heather (Naveed) Anjum, and Lisa (Daniel) Walters; step-grandchildren Stacie Hughey Martinez and Brian Hughey; great-grandchildren Avery Johnson, Claire and Collette Hovis, Aspen and Easton Smith, Daniel Teague, Aaleyah and Ammarah Anjum, Pola Hurney, and Elijah Walters; step-grandchildren Emma and Zander Martinez and Ella and Breanne Hughey. Also surviving are her sister Evelyn (Tom) Logie, sister-in-law Angelina (Jean) Gwizdala, and half-sister Kathy (Kit) Schreiber. Those who preceded her in death, besides her husband, are her brothers Don and Jack Wargo.

Helen will be remembered for her caring nature, lifelong friendships, love of reading, enjoyment of word circle puzzles, and game-show cuddles. She loved her Bible studies, was a doll collector, and member of the American Legion for many years. Her card games and laughter will forever fill our memories.

A service in her honor will be held at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State), Saginaw, Michigan on Saturday, September 28th, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Senior Pastor, Josiah Kagin from Grace Baptist Church will officiate. Inurnment to follow the service at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Afterwards, we invite family and friends to dinner at Bytes Fusion Grill, 5656 State Street, Saginaw, Michigan (in the Westwood Shopping Center).

Helen was such a sweet lady. I always enjoyed her spirit. I was truly blessed to have known her. She has such beautiful eyes. I know her family and all of us will miss her, until we see her again soon
