Merla Simmons

Merla “Kay” Simmons, age 81, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Brian's House in Essexville, Michigan. Kay was born on May 7, 1942 in Saginaw, Michigan. She looked forward to being reunited in heaven with her beloved parents, James and Marie (Emmendorfer) Simmons.

Kay was known for her great story-telling ability, often recounting the many adventures she had protesting alongside nuns at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, traveling throughout Alaska, visiting family in Texas, riding her motorcycle through the countryside, clowning around as Catfish Kate, going out of her way to assist students as a bus and taxi driver, providing street-smart life lessons to young people, and living a life of faith in the Catholic Church.

Kay's cherished friends, family, and neighbors admired her good humor, sense of adventure, and kind service to them. She shared a special connection with her aunt, Rosalie Bennett, who survives her. Kay treasured her fur-babies, too, and gave them a great life of companionship and love.

FUNERAL: Funeral Mass for Kay will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 11:00 AM, from Ss Francis and Clare Parish, 12157 Church St., Birch Run, MI 48415 with Fr. David Jenuwine to officiate.

VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at the church Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass.
