Brettrager, Edward J.

Spaulding Twp., Michigan

Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at his residence. He was 95 years old. Edward Jack Brettrager was born on April 20, 1928 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Bechtel) Brettrager. He married Lucile Gushen on January 17, 1948 in Saginaw, Michigan at Holy Family Catholic Church. They celebrated 76 years together. Ed owned and operated Spaulding Machine and Spaulding MFG Inc. He was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau and Holy Family Catholic Church for many years.

Ed will be remembered as a hard worker. He loved farming and always said that he enjoyed watching the corn grow. But, what Ed really loved most was being with his family.

Surviving is his wife, Lucile Brettrager; children, Karen (Partner Rod Green) Moore, Gary (Dawn) Brettrager, of Palmer, Alaska, and Linda (Robert) Kwapis; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph Brettrager, Elizabeth Fortier, Theresa Stanulis, Henry Brettrager, Eleanor Hart, Norman Brettrager, and Donald Brettrager.

FUNERAL SERVICE: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw, MI 48601. Rev. Fr. Robert Byrne will officiate. A committal service will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Saginaw.

VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Friday, March 8, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

MEMORIALS: Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.

Lucile, Gary, Linda and Karen- Please accept my most sincere sympathy in the passing of Ed. He sure was a character. I enjoyed working for him and with him. Ed was my first boss. As a 16 year old kid getting his feet wet in the machining industry I learned a lot, “If you got time to lean, you got time to clean.” Ed took a liking to me maybe because we had birthdays on 4-20 But more likely because I liked to work and make money. Working Saturdays just him in the office and me on the shop floor cleaning. A trip out to his daughter’s house to get hay or straw. We always had something he had to work on. Worked on some cool stuff in the year I worked for him. 8 place EGR value machine for GM. Black top Hot road patchers. He liked to tell stories. The one I remember the most was how his wife had to purchase his first car (I think it was a 57 Chevy Bel air) because he was to young. I will always have fond memories of working for and with Ed at Spaulding machine. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
