Lafferty, Patrick Joseph Saginaw, Michigan Passed away peacefully on Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, Saginaw. He was 77 years old. Patrick Joseph Lafferty was born on April 3, 1938 in Saginaw, MI to the late George A. and Josephine (Schrems) Lafferty. Pat graduated from St. Andrew High School in 1956. He then attended the University of Louisville on a Navy ROTC scholarship, and after graduation he attended flight school in New Iberia, Louisiana. Upon receiving his wings, Pat flew off the USS Enterprise. After leaving the Navy, Pat attended Michigan State University and received a teaching degree and then taught school both in Michigan and Ohio. Pat has spent the last twenty-two years residing in Saginaw. Pat is survived by two brothers: Thomas Lafferty and Michael (Amy) Lafferty; two nephews: Daniel and Mathew Lafferty. Pat also has three step children, Ellen Fakes, Jeff May, and Chris May. The family would like to extend its gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Saginaw VA Hospital for the excellent care that they provided. FUNERAL: A Funeral Liturgy for Pat will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at St. Dominic Parish, St. Stephen site, 1310 Malzahn St., Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Andrew LaFramboise will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to St. Dominic Parish or to Aleda E Lutz VA-Palliative Care Unit. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd., (off State). Jack and I send our sympathy to Pat's family and friends but we know that Pat is in a better place, Pat was my boyfriend and buddy in high school at St. Andrews and he will be remembered for his loyal friendships, his intelligence and his fantastic sense of humor - oh, could that guy laugh!!! HE WILL BE MISSED!!

I met Pat when we were both members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the U. of Louisville. We became good friends as well. I was a year ahead of Pat, but we were both at Louisville on NROTC scholarships, got commissions in the U. S. Navy upon graduation and were accepted into flight training. Upon earning our wings we were both assigned to VAW12 in Norfolk, VA. Pat was the proud owner of a yellow Triumph TR3 sports car at the time. When he was scheduled to deploy with his detachment on a Mediterranean cruise he asked me to sell this car for him. Not long after deploying Pat, tragically walked into the path of a spinning propellor of his aircraft on the flight deck during the recovery period of night flight operations. He miraculously survived this accident but suffered numerous injuries including the loss of his right arm. I hadn't sold his TR3 yet when he returned and he was able to drive it with one arm, not easy as it had a manual transmission. I didn't see much more of Pat after his return but will always have fond memories of him.

Pat was one of the first students I met at the University of Louisville in the fall of 1956. We were in the same dorm (WWII barracks) and used to throw baseballs along with "Shifty" Roeser, also from Saginaw. We were both in the NROTC and joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity together. He had a great sense of humor and laugh as well as anybody. Sorry to hear of his passing!
