Vera Hoganson

HOGANSON, Vera Annie (Tebbett) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Edgewood Living Center. She was 93 years old. Our fun and loving mother was born on March 24, 1920 in Portsmouth, England to the late Annie Rosina Bonus and Charles Thomas Tebbett. She attended All Hallows Anglican Church School and The Gedling School for Girls. With the onset of World War II Vera joined the Royal Airforce and became a proud WAAF, which began the adventure of her life and was the source of many stories. While stationed in London during the Blitz she met the love of her life, an American Serviceman, Harold Hamilton Hoganson. They married June 10, 1944 in Nottingham, England. He predeceased her on February 22, 1974. Vera came to America as a War Bride in 1946 and she and Hogy traveled the United States, finally settling in Trenton, Michigan. She became a U.S. Citizen in August 12, 1958 and proudly celebrated every July 4th. Vera was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Trenton and St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Trans-Atlantic War Brides of America, the Detroit Chapter became extended family. Always the lady, our mother was a laughing woman who enjoyed life and had many dear friends. Vera is survived by two children: Melanie and the late, Dr. Gary Hollman, Phillip (Yvette) Hoganson and three grandchildren she adored: TC McLeod who helped care for her in her later years and with whom she had a special bond, Mick Hoganson and Lindsey (Greg) Tilley. Attending Lindsey and Greg's wedding last July was a highlight of her life. Also surviving are a niece, Angela (Ray) South and great niece and nephew, Victoria (Alan) Powell and Christopher (Julie) South and their children; a dear cousin, Patricia (Roger) Youngs in England; her life-long friend, Rose Stannard and family of Windsor, Canada. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Wilfred Woolhouse in Cheltenham, England and a dear friend, Mary Lee McLaughlin. Our family wishes to thank South Colony Apartments staff and residents, especially Margaret Wegner and Mary Henderson, the staff of Edgewood, Dr. Caroline Scott and Dr. Charles Borchard for their loving care of our Mum in her later years. Also deep gratitude and appreciation to her beloved caregivers: Kelly Severe, Lori Branshaw, and especially Hillary Lemmer. Our Mum was all about a cup of tea and a good laugh - so put the kettle on and call a friend in her honor. FUNERAL: A Memorial Service will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013 at St. John Episcopal Church, 123 N. Michigan Ave. Fr. Daniel Cannon will officiate. Honoring Vera's wishes her body was donated, just like her husband, to the University of Michigan Medical School. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the church on Friday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Service.
