Obituary

GARBER, Guy S. "Ike" of Saginaw Township passed away on Monday, September 24, 2012, at the Cartwright Hospice Residence with his family by his side. He was 92 years old. Guy S. Garber was born on April 3, 1920, in Saginaw to the late Guy S. Garber Sr. and Hazel Denyes. He was married to Yvonne J. Yntema in February 1946 in Saginaw; she preceded him in death on January 7, 2005. Ike was President of the Garber Pontiac Cadillac Dealership in Saginaw for many years. He was also President of Garb-Ko, Inc., which held the franchise for 7-11 stores throughout Michigan; selling his franchise after owning 103 stores throughout the state. Following his ventures with Garb-Ko, Ike was one of the original developers of Bay Valley Golf & Tennis Resort. He attended Cranbrook Academy and graduated from Arthur Hill High School. Ike played #1 singles on the varsity tennis team for all four years. Ike attended the University of Miami on a tennis scholarship. There he and his roommate Poncho Segura won many tennis tournaments around the country. He later won the State of Michigan Junior and Senior Tennis championships. Ike was instrumental in founding Garber Tennis Courts in Saginaw. Ike was in World War II in the First Marine Division and was in the Battle Pella Liu and Okinawa at the end of the war Guy was stationed in Peking, China to repatriate the war refugees. Surviving are three daughters; Anne Garber Grimm of Tampa, FL, Susan Garber (Denny) Whalen and Jenny Garber (Ken) Wright all of Saginaw. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ike was preceded in death by his son Guy S. Garber Jr. and two sisters and three brothers, Jack Garber, Maxine Geyer, Richard Garber Sr., Jane Godfrey and Robert Garber. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Monday, October 1, 2012 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A private Memorial Service will take place at a later date, with military honors conducted under the auspices of VFW Post 1859.
