Obituary
Passed away unexpectedly February, 6, 2020 at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital at the age of 79. Doris was born in Saginaw, Michigan on September 10, 1940 the daughter of James "Kenneth" and Agnes (Riska) O'Toole. Doris graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1958 and went on to St. Mary's Nursing School and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. She was an RN for 45 years; the last 30 years were spent in St. Mary's Emergency Department before her retirement in 2008. Doris was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church and St. Mary's Hospital Nursing Alumni. She enjoyed reading, traveling and working out; especially Tai chi. Doris was a very active member of the OLLI Group at S.V.S.U. and cared a lot about people continuing their education through their lifetime. She was also a member of the Ham Radio Operator Group. Doris is survived by her three son, Robert James, Michael Dennis and Patrick Joseph Miles; sister, Patti Miles and many dear friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Alexander Miles and a brother James O'Toole. FUNERAL: Mass of Celebration will take place Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM from St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 6400 McCarty Rd. with Rev. Fr. James Bassert to officiate. Inurnment to follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at the church Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Doris was one of my mentors when I worked in the Emergency Room as a new RN. She was great to work with. I'm sure going to miss her. I'm so sorry for your loss Rob, Mike, and PJ. I'm sure you guys will miss her too. Denise (Sova) VanderHaar.

Doris was a neighbor during her school days, just a block up Hoyt on the way to St. Mary's from my home. She was a sweet person, outgoing and understanding. And she always seemed to have a smiling countenance. In school she was always involved in extra-curricular activities. Sweet she was but also tough. Being an ER nurse is no picnic, and she endured that for so many years. And she was outstandingly loyal to her classmates in the Class of '58, planning gatherings and attending so many of them. On February 1, just a few days ago, there she was at our annual class gathering at Fuzzy's, and I'm glad I gave her a hug as we departed.
